Many beauty enthusiasts swear by baking soda as an effective way to lighten the skin . They claim it is a multi-purpose beauty must have for clear
skin .
Most claims center around Baking soda’s ability to rid of uneven skin tone and lightening in this context doesn’t mean skin bleaching .
I had been wondering if Baking soda really works on the skin,so I decided to put it to test by making it a part of my skin care routine .I wanted to see if this is just some beauty myth or if there was credence to its efficacy.
I dedicated two weeks, to try out this miracle powder .So I ditched every other product except my moisturizer.
Because with the acidic content of baking soda, proper moisturizing is key.
What Is Baking Soda ? Is it different from baking powder?
Many confuse baking soda and baking powder because of their similarities.
Baking soda is a base mineral, which, when combined with something acidic, produces carbon dioxide.
Baking soda is basically ground up rock, and is used for baking .
That’s not all,it is a good DIY product, widely used in unclogging drains cleaning surface stains and even deodorizing the carpet.
Baking powder on the other hand, is actually a combination of baking soda plus another acid.Baking powder has lifting power in recipes—without which, you’d have some sad-looking bakery on your hands.
What can you use baking soda for?
So,back to my experiment. According to research , baking soda can be used to solve the following skin problems
- Lighten dark armpits
- Exfoliate dead skin cells on feet
- Face and body scrub
- Lighten and tighten skin
- Fades acne or black spots
- Whiten teeth
- Hair clarifier
- Removes tan
- Deodorant
I surely wasn’t going to test it’s efficacy in all areas. I wanted to answer a question many ask ’does baking soda lighten the skin?’
How To Lighten The Skin With Baking Soda
I mixed baking soda in water.Equal amounts to form a paste and just use to scrub your skin.
If your skin isn’t too sensitive, you can mix it with some lemon juice instead and apply on your face.
Since it is acidic, I left it on my face for no longer than 10 minutes.
On the body, I left it on for 20 minutes .Washed off with cold water and my face felt refreshed and visibly clearer.
My verdict using Baking Soda
So, I used baking soda to lighten my skin by applying on my face and body three times a week and I must say, I felt smooth and flawless after my first use. My body was no exception.
Basically used it to scrub my body, but was more gentle on the face by just applying like a mask.
So, does baking soda really lighten the skin? Yes it sure does.
